About the designer
Over the course of his career, the skilled craftsman and designer Kay Bojesen created more than 2,000 different designs, making him one of the most prolific Danish artisans of the 20th century. Besides his well-known and beloved monkeys and other wooden animals, his work also includes jewelry, cutlery, teapots, and silver goblets. Kay Bojesen initially trained as a silversmith with Georg Jensen. The birth of his son Otto in 1919 sparked Bojesen's interest in children's toys. He carved small wooden figures and, in the 1930s, focused his attention entirely on working with wood. He deliberately avoided creating lifelike replicas of animals, instead aiming for imaginative variations with a soft and flowing design rooted in the imagination of children.
