About the designer
The fine craftsman and designer Kay Bojesen has produced more than 2000 different designs over the course of his career. This makes him one of the most productive Danish craftsmen of the 20th century. In addition to the well-known and popular monkeys and other wooden animals, his work also includes jewellery, cutlery, teapots and silver goblets. Kay Bojesen initially trained as a silversmith with Georg Jensen. When his son Otto was born in 1919, Bojesen became interested in children's toys. He carved small wooden figures and finally focussed his interest entirely on working with wood in the 1930s. He deliberately did not want to create lifelike copies of animals, but imaginative variations with a soft and flowing design that originated in the imagination of children.
