How it all began: No. 1 Dining table Grandpa Erwin
The story of Grandpa Erwin begins with this table. The No.1 dining table consists of a 4.5 cm thick tabletop made of moon wood and a frame made of powder-coated metal. The special feature: The geo-coordinates of the processed tree are immortalised on the high-quality wooden surface. The table is 100% made in Germany!
Only sustainably grown moonwood is used for the furniture by Opa Erwin. Moonwood is cut according to old handicraft knowledge in winter shortly before the new moon. As a result, the wood has special characteristics: due to the external conditions, the wood has grown extremely densely, dries very well and is dimensionally stable. In addition, it is robust, stable and can be processed without chemicals that are harmful to the environment or health. It is therefore ideally suited for the design of sophisticated and high-quality furniture.
Opa Erwin - sustainable design furniture from Germany
The story of Opa Erwin's sustainable design furniture began in 2017 when Joachim Bohner and his girlfriend were looking for an unusual dining table that would be visually appealing, authentic and sustainable. He didn't really find what he was looking for, so together with his father Wolfgang he designed and made this dining table himself in his grandfather's old workshop. This gave rise to the idea of developing a special furniture brand. His grandfather, Grandpa Erwin himself, had already found his vocation in carpentry and his son Wolfgang has also been a passionate carpenter for over 40 years. This is how high-quality craftsmanship meets the more than ever current idea of sustainability. Opa Erwin is particularly concerned about the regional connection to wood and its entire value chain. The furniture is made in cooperation with small craftsmen from the region in southern Germany.
Material and size
The table is made of high-quality southern German moon wood and powder-coated metal elements. Due to the individual grain of the material, each piece is unique in its design. It is 160 or 220 cm wide, 90 cm deep and 74 cm high. The wood is 4.5 cm thick.
Note: The wood is only treated with natural oil so that it can breathe. Liquids roll off, but the surface is only waterproof for a certain time. Therefore, liquids should be removed promptly. A soft, damp cloth is suitable for daily cleaning. Then wipe with a dry cloth. Please do not use microfibre cloths, as these can scratch the surface. The table should be re-oiled from time to time (1-4 times a year). To do this, the table surface must be clean and dry. Apply the maintenance oil with a soft, lint-free cloth, let it soak in and polish again. Any dirt marks or imprints from glasses can be removed before oiling with a fine abrasive fleece by sanding in the direction of the grain. The metal elements can be wiped with a dry or damp cloth.
