The popular VITRA DAW is part of the Eames Plastic Chair collection by Charles & Ray Eames.
The name DAW describes the use and material as it is the abbreviation for "Dining Armchair wood base"

Thus the armrest chair DAW comes with a wooden frame which looks rustic yet elegant thanks to the metal struts.

Innovation: DAW as the first plastic chair

The DAW chair was shown for the first time in 1848 on the occasion of the "Low Cost Furniture Design" competition
of the Museum of Modern Art in New York where it earned the second place.

Today the DAW is a classic which should not be missing at home or in public spaces, at the time of its creation it was a
real novum. The idea of a seating shell made of one piece was new at that time.

"The most of the best to the greatest number of people for the least" - this aim fulfills the DAW by Charles & Ray Eames.
Thus the first serial produced, affordable plastic chair with extraordinary design was created.

With the Plastic Arm Chair DAW Charles & Ray Eames revolutionized the furniture history of the 1950s. The population of
Europe and the USA where in upheaval after the war. This influenced interior design and lifestyle. With the DAW and the other
Plastic Chairs Charles & Ray Eames contributed to free living spaces from the dominant control. Homely, useful furniture and
living accessoires where on the rise - with the DAW the designer couple made an example.

From America to Europe

In the beginning of the 1940s the DAW was produced in the USA by Herman Miller. Its move across the Atlantic made the DAW
at the beginning of the 50s when Erika and Willi Fehlbaum discovered the Eames chair in a display window during a US trip.

Delighted by the design of the plastic chair the Vitra founders negotiated the license for the sale of the Eames Plastic Chairs in Europe.
In the end they were successful and Vitra became the licensed manufacturer of the chairs in Europe and Asia. Until today Vitra is the only
licensed manufacturer for this area.

Charles & Ray Eames had a deep connection with Vitra. This is displayed in the fact that Vitra is in the possession of the Eames Archive -
and the Eames family.

Vitra still acts, long after the death of the designer couple in their interest and are always asking themselves when developing a collection:
"What would Charles & Ray Eames think?".

Initially the Eames Plastic Armchair DAW was made of polyester resin reinforced with fibre glass. This material was at that time revolutionary
as it provided great formability. But since Vitra put the emphasis on environmental friendliness the manufacturer no longer used fiberglass.

This lead to a production stop of the Eames Plastic Chairs in 1993. Six years later the solution was found and recycable polypropylen
was introduced. It allows the same formability, is environmentally friendly and offers great seating comfort.

For the frame of the DAW Plastic Chair by Vitra always used maple which you can order online in three different finishes: stained
yellowish, dark brown stained and black stained. In 2016 the honey coloured ash frame was introduced. The DAW by Vitra does not only
offer high seating comfort but is also very sturdy and carries up to 110 kg.

One chair, multiple usage

Not only its unique design but also its universal usability has added to the popularity of the Eames Plastic Armchair. Thus the Vitra DAW
fits into living or dining room but also in public spaces. The DAW is also great  chair for waiting areas.
